Montuzza Tunnel and the Scala dei Giganti

Montuzza Tunnel and the Scala dei Giganti
Frontal view of the Montuzza Tunnel with the monumental Scala dei Giganti (Giants' Stairway) rising above it. The stone-arched tunnel entrance opens at the centre of the composition, while a lone passer-by walks through the gallery. Above the arch the flights of the Scala dei Giganti unfold, linked by arched bridges creating a dramatic architectural sequence. Residential buildings of the Montuzza neighbourhood rise on either side. The tunnel, inaugurated in 1906, connected the centre of Trieste with the San Giacomo quarter, while the Scala dei Giganti allowed pedestrians to reach the streets above.

Year: 1906
