The San Carlo Lazaretto and Trieste Lanterna

The San Carlo Lazaretto and Trieste Lanterna
This splendid panoramic view from 1898 captures the Campo Marzio area in Trieste, dominated by the structures of the old Lazzaretto San Carlo. Used at the time as the Navy Barracks, the complex of buildings extends towards the harbor, where various steamships and sailing vessels can be seen moored in the \"Sacchetta\". In the background, the iconic Lanterna (Lighthouse) of Trieste watches over the gulf, defining the coastline of the Habsburg city. Of the entire historical complex visible in the foreground, only the building housing the Sea Museum remains today, making this image a valuable testimony of late 19th-century urban layout.
