Lazzaretto Vecchio
This historical photograph depicts the Lazzaretto Vecchio of Trieste, one of the most significant buildings for the sanitary and maritime history of the city. The structure, characterized by a simple yet elegant facade, with regular windows and a small central balcony, was intended for quarantine operations for people and goods coming from the sea, in order to prevent the spread of epidemics. Noticeable are the large entrance gate and the enclosing wall that delimited the area of the lazzaretto. The atmosphere of the photo, with some people walking or lingering in front of the building, conveys an image of daily life from the late nineteenth century or early twentieth century, in an area that was long fundamental for the sanitary security of the port of Trieste.
