Piazza delle Legna, today Goldoni, late 1800s

Historical photo of Piazza delle Legna, today Piazza Goldoni, in Trieste at the end of the nineteenth century. In the foreground the market stalls in the shade of the awnings and the cast-iron lamp posts; in the center the tram tracks cross the square. On the left the Teatro Armonia of 1857, later demolished in 1912, can be recognized. On the right side shops and shop windows run along, while a horse-drawn carriage and passersby animate the scene, offering a vivid urban view of the era.
