Piazza Grande before the Construction of the Palazzo del Lloyd

Piazza Grande before the Construction of the Palazzo del Lloyd
This historical photograph shows the Piazza Grande of Trieste (today Piazza Unità d’Italia) around 1880, shortly before the construction of the monumental Palazzo del Lloyd Triestino. In the foreground, the square appears wide and still quite bare, animated by passersby moving among carriages and vendors. On the sea side, trees can be seen and, beyond, the masts of the moored ships, emphasizing the direct link between the square and the port. The buildings that form the urban backdrop have a sober nineteenth-century imprint; the imposing volume and decorations that will characterize the new palazzo del Lloyd at the end of the century are still missing. The image captures the atmosphere of imperial Trieste in growth, when the square was already a civic and commercial center but had not yet assumed the monumental appearance we know today.
