Meridionale Railway Station and Lazzaretto di Santa Teresa
This historical photograph shows the Meridionale Railway Station and the Lazzaretto di Santa Teresa in Trieste around 1870. In the foreground, the low and elongated buildings of the lazzaretto are visible, with their sloping roofs and small windows, which served for the quarantine and sanitary control of goods and people arriving from the port. In the background, the structures of the Meridionale railway station can be distinguished, with the warehouses, sheds, and tracks extending towards the city. The image well conveys the atmosphere of a Trieste in full commercial and infrastructural expansion, a crossroads of maritime and railway traffic in the nineteenth century.
