Via di Riborgo, Children Among the Old Town Shops

A glimpse of Via di Riborgo in the heart of Trieste's Old Town: children play on the cobblestones while laundry hangs between the building facades. On the left, the sign of a colonial goods shop, typical of the neighbourhood's small-scale commerce. The street, among the oldest in the city, followed the route towards the Riborgo gate of medieval Trieste, in an urban fabric later largely demolished by twentieth-century clearances.
