Via di Riborgo Before the Demolitions of the 1930s
This historical image shows a stretch of Via di Riborgo in Trieste, one of the most characteristic streets of the old city. Typical multi-story popular houses are noticeable, with facades marked by time, open shutters, and numerous signs of artisan workshops and shops, among which a “calzoleria” stands out. Electric wires cross the street, adding a period detail to the urban atmosphere. The ensemble conveys the sense of an authentic and popular Trieste, made of small trades, neighborhood life, and simple but history-rich architectures. The absence of modern traffic and the presence of few passersby contribute to restoring the atmosphere of the early 20th century, when Riborgo was one of the pulsating hearts of the city.
