View of the Canal Grande
This historical photograph shows the Canal Grande of Trieste, one of the most iconic places in the city. On the left, the majestic Serbian Orthodox Church of the Santissima Trinità and of San Spiridione stands out clearly, recognizable by its large domes and Byzantine architecture. The canal is animated by numerous boats and port activities, while the banks are crowded with people and flanked by elegant historical buildings. In the background, the port and the sea can be glimpsed, testifying to the maritime vocation of Trieste. The image perfectly restores the lively and cosmopolitan atmosphere of the city between the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century.
