Opicina rack railway, tramcar climbing with a view over Trieste

A postally used postcard from the early twentieth century shows tramcar no. 2 of the Opicina tramway climbing the rack railway section, with the toothed rail clearly visible in the middle of the track. Behind the tram opens the panorama over the city of Trieste, its port and the gulf. The German caption "Trieste, Zahnradbahn nach Opcina mit Aussicht auf Trieste" reflects the Habsburg era of the line, opened in 1902. The rack system overcame the steep Scorcola gradient and remained in service until 1928, when it was replaced by the funicular section still in use today.
