La Chiesa della Beata Vergine del Soccorso, also known as Sant'Antonio Vecchio, is one of the oldest churches in Trieste with a history deeply rooted in the social and religious fabric of the city.
Origins and historical context
The local tradition attributes the presence of a Franciscan community in the area already around 1226, linked to Sant'Antonio da Padova. The original church was part of a convent of the Frati Minori, attested in the 1694 drawing by Pietro Rossetti and visible in eighteenth-century prints, in a neighborhood once close to the sea.
Asburgo Periodo and Trasformazioni
Rebuilt in 1560 and radically modified in 1774, in that year it assumed the title of Beata Vergine del Soccorso, due to the presence of an altarpiece executed by the artist Federico Emmerth, a copy of a work by Pietro de Pomis preserved in Graz. In 1783, in application of the Josephinian reforms that polarized the ecclesiastical role in the city, the convent was suppressed and the church passed under the care of the diocesan clergy, becoming a subsidiary of Santa Maria Maggiore. This transition marked the end of the Franciscan era in Trieste. In 1813 the church obtained the baptismal font, establishing itself as an active place of worship in the community.
Architecture and restorations
During the XIX century, more precisely in 1847, the church was expanded and subjected to conservation works that defined its appearance still recognizable today. The expansion project was carried out according to the engineer Giuseppe Bernardi, reflecting the styles and liturgical needs of the Asburgo era.
Relevant events and social role
The religious complex originally also housed a school equipped with a rich library, unique in the city until 1620, and preserved important historical documents of Trieste, a sign of the intellectual and cultural role assumed by the friars over the centuries. The devotion to Sant'Antonio, proclaimed co-patron of the city in 1666, consolidated the position of the church in the heart of the city community.
Primo dopoguerra and subsequent developments
Although no precise details emerge regarding the church in the Primo dopoguerra, it can be deduced that the structure continued to perform its parish function and today represents an important historical-religious monument of the city, a witness to the cultural and political stratifications that have characterized Trieste over the centuries.
In summary, La Chiesa della Beata Vergine del Soccorso represents a living link between Renaissance Trieste, the Baroque era, and the Trasformazioni imposed by the Asburgo Impero and the ecclesiastical reforms of the XVIII-XIX century, maintaining a central role in the religious and cultural history of the city.
