The Greek-Orthodox Cemetery of Trieste is the burial place of the Greek community, one of the oldest and wealthiest merchant colonies in Habsburg Trieste. The Greek community had been settled in Trieste since the period of the free port (1719) and contributed decisively to the commercial development of the imperial port.
The first cemetery of the community was located behind Piazza Goldoni, at the foot of the Montuzza hill, precisely behind Palazzo Tonello. This original area was later dismantled without leaving any trace and replaced by the current one, inserted in the large cemetery complex of the Sant'Anna suburb — the funerary hub built by the Habsburg administration in the nineteenth century to concentrate the cemeteries of the various confessional communities of the city in one place.
The Greek Community in Trieste
Greek merchants were among the main protagonists of maritime trade in imperial Trieste. Many of the most influential Greek families left a lasting mark on the city's toponymy, architecture, and cultural life, as testified by the Greek-Orthodox Church of San Nicolò and numerous palaces in the historic center.
