Palazzo Brigido

Historical Card - Trieste

Palazzo Brigido is an elegant noble palace in the historic center of Trieste, linked to one of the most singular moments in the city's history: the visit of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Napoleon in Trieste — April 29, 1797

On April 29, 1797, the young General Napoleon Bonaparte, returning from the Italian campaign, passed through Trieste for his only visit to the city. He stayed at Palazzo Brigido, then the residence of one of the most prominent noble families of Habsburg Trieste. On that occasion, after imposing a heavy levy of 20,000 florins on the city, he partially exempted the population thanks to the mediation of local authorities.

The French Period

Between 1797 and 1813, Trieste experienced several French occupations alternating with the return of the Habsburgs. The city temporarily lost its free port status — with serious consequences for its economy — and was never the capital of the Illyrian Provinces, a role assigned to Laibach (modern-day Ljubljana). In 1813, one of the last military episodes saw cannon balls strike the Castle of San Giusto during the French siege.

The Legacy

Napoleon's passage through Palazzo Brigido remained in the collective Triestine memory as one of the most vivid episodes of the French period — a tumultuous parenthesis that, though brief, accelerated the city's modernization and confirmed its strategic role in the Europe of the time.
