Palazzo Dreher is one of the most representative buildings in the historic center of Trieste, located in a strategic position between Piazza della Borsa and via San Nicolò. Its history reflects the economic, social, and architectural evolution of the city between the end of the nineteenth century and the twentieth century.
Origins and Commission
The palace was commissioned by the Bohemian brewer Theodor Dreher, a member of one of the most important families of master brewers in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, who had started one of his main factories in Trieste as early as 1870. The construction of the building, destined to become the largest private structure open to the public in the city, began in 1908 and was completed in 1910. The project was entrusted to the Viennese architects Emil Bressler and Gustav Wittrisch, known for their eclectic style, which mixed Mannerist and Baroque elements, giving the palace a monumental and refined appearance.
Original Function and Social Life
Originally, Palazzo Dreher housed:
- On the ground floor: an elegant restaurant with a panoramic terrace, halls for parties, kitchens, warehouses, and commercial activities.
- On the upper floors: reception lounges, offices, the manager's residence, and staff accommodations.
The real attraction was the panoramic terrace, served by elevators and dumbwaiters, which became a meeting point for the best Triestine society, especially during the performances of the nearby theater. It is said that the orchestra players would play to signal the end of the intermission to the guests intent on enjoying beer and ice cream, in a cosmopolitan and lively atmosphere.
Transformations in the Twentieth Century: the Borsa Nuova
After the First World War, with the decline of the Dreher family and the economic changes in the city, the palace changed its purpose. In 1926 it was purchased by the Provincial Council of Corporate Economy (later Chamber of Commerce) and, between 1928 and 1929, it was adapted by the Triestine architect Gustavo Pulitzer-Finaly to house the Borsa Nuova, the new center for Triestine stock exchanges. Since then, the building is also known as “Palazzo della Borsa Nuova”.
Architecture and Restorations
Palazzo Dreher is an example of eclectic architecture from the early twentieth century, with:
- Facades adorned with decorative details
- Wrought iron balconies
- Large windows
The building has undergone important restorations, the last of which was completed in 2020, restoring to the city its original elegance and adapting it to contemporary standards of safety and sustainability. Today the palace houses prestigious residential spaces, offices, and commercial areas, maintaining its function as a reference point in the heart of Trieste.
Curiosities and Current Affairs
In addition to its architectural value, Palazzo Dreher is home to the Museo Commerciale di Trieste, which tells the story of the Chamber of Commerce and the port, and represents a symbol of the cosmopolitan and entrepreneurial Trieste of the early twentieth century. The recent renovation has enhanced both the historical interiors and the modern housing solutions, making the palace an example of dialogue between past and present.
Palazzo Dreher thus remains a living testimony to the economic, social, and cultural history of Trieste, capable of adapting to the changes of the city without losing its charm and centrality.
