The Caffè Pasticceria Pirona is one of the most beloved and iconic historic venues in Trieste, located at Largo Barriera Vecchia 12. Founded in 1900 by Alberto Pirona, the venue is situated in an area characterized by elegant late neoclassical buildings and stands out for its refined Art Nouveau style, still well preserved today. From its origins, Pirona has established itself as a reference point for the nobility, the bourgeoisie and especially for the Triestine intelligentsia, becoming a true literary salon of the city.
A place of culture and illustrious encounters
The Caffè Pirona is famous for having been frequented by some of the greatest intellectuals and writers of the twentieth century. James Joyce, who lived on the same street between 1910 and 1912, was a regular customer and according to tradition began drafting the first chapters of Ulysses right here. Italo Svevo and Umberto Saba were also regular visitors, finding among the tables of Pirona an ideal environment for discussion, writing and inspiration. The venue thus became a true hub of Triestine intellectual and cultural life, a crossroads of ideas, literature and friendships.
Style, furnishings and specialties
The charm of the Caffè Pirona is also linked to its interiors: cherry wood furnishings, Art Nouveau inlays, brass, original display cases and historic machinery from the late nineteenth century, such as the planetary mixer and the cash register. The wooden sign is still the original one, testifying to the continuity and care in the preservation of the venue.
The pastry shop is renowned for its artisanal production of typical sweets from the Triestine and Austro-Hungarian tradition:
- Presnitz
- Putizza
- Pinza
- Fave
- Marzapani
- Mandorlati as well as cakes like the Sacher and the Rigojancsi. The chocolate, biscuits and jams are prepared according to ancient recipes, making Pirona an unmissable destination for those seeking authentic and refined flavors.
Recognitions and protection
In 1994 the Caffè Pirona was included among the Locali Storici d’Italia and since 2018 it has been protected by the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio del Friuli Venezia Giulia for its historical and artistic value. Despite changes in management – from the Pirona family to the De Marchi, up to the recent reopening in 2019 thanks to the Viezzoli family – the venue has always maintained its period atmosphere and the quality of its pastry production intact.
The Caffè Pirona today
After a brief closure in 2017, the Caffè Pirona reopened its doors in 2019, once again becoming a reference point for Triestines and tourists. Today, in addition to offering high-quality sweets and coffee, the venue preserves the memory of a century of city history, between culture, art and tradition. Sitting at its tables means immersing oneself in the atmosphere of literary and cosmopolitan Trieste, on the trails of Joyce, Svevo and Saba.
The Caffè Pirona thus remains a symbol of Mitteleuropean Trieste, a meeting place between past and present, between taste, history and literature.
