Muzio de Tommasini

Historical Card - Trieste

Muzio de Tommasini (1794-1879) was a prominent figure in Trieste in the XIX century, celebrated both as a politician and as a botanist scholar of international scope. He held the positions of Preside of Trieste from 1839 to 1850 and of Podestà from 1850 to 1861, in the Asburgo period, characterized by important social and urban transformations in the city.

Historical context and political activity

During his administration as Podestà, Muzio de Tommasini oversaw significant urban enhancement works, with particular attention to the environment and public green spaces, a sign of a forward-looking vision regarding the development of the city.

In 1852 he promoted the creation of the Giardino Pubblico of Trieste, today dedicated to him, conceived as a "civilized" and well-kept green space, in contrast to the more spontaneous and wild nature of the nearby Carso.

His initiative arose from the purchase in 1844 of the land called "fondo delle monache", a property of the Benedictines, with the initial intention of building a church, a project later abandoned in favor of creating the garden.

Botanical and cultural contributions

In addition to his administrative role, Tommasini distinguished himself as a scholar and cultivator of Botany. He actively collaborated in the development of the Civico Orto Botanico di Trieste, which became public in 1873 and was enriched also thanks to his relations with other experts, including Raimondo Tominz.

Under the guidance of his successors, the Orto Botanico expanded with specialized collections:

reflecting the solid scientific foundation set by Tommasini.

The Giardino Pubblico Muzio de Tommasini

Created around 1854, the Giardino Pubblico Muzio de Tommasini is today a small but well-maintained green lung in the heart of Trieste. It houses busts of historical city personalities, including the writer Italo Svevo, who set some of his most famous works in this place, such as "Senilità" and "La coscienza di Zeno".

The garden represents a point of reference for the Trieste community, with cultural events such as open-air cinema that enliven the summer evenings.

Evolutions and significance

The contribution of Muzio de Tommasini fits into the context of Asburgo Trieste, a growing city that was preparing its urban and cultural future. His work allowed the preservation and enhancement of green areas in an era when industrialization and urban expansion increasingly threatened natural spaces.

Subsequently to the first post-war period, the garden has maintained its function as a public green space, testifying to its historical and environmental importance.
