Tor Cucherna

Historical Card - Trieste

Tor Cucherna

Tor Cucherna is a medieval tower located in Trieste, built in the XIV century with the primary function of night surveillance of the city walls.

The name "Cucherna" probably derives from the German verb "gucken", which means "to peek", a term that has also influenced the local dialect with the word "cucar".

Historical Role and Fortifications

Originally an integral part of Trieste's fortifications, the tower was one of the strategic control and guard points in the medieval city walls.

Demolition of the Walls and Preservation

In 1719, with the proclamation of the Free Port, the city demolished most of the walls to allow for urban and commercial expansion, but Tor Cucherna was spared because it was transformed into a residence, thus preserving a trace of the medieval structure.

Architectural Restoration

In 1910 the tower was the subject of an important architectural restoration that recovered its decorative and identity function, readapting the upper part with bricks and restoring its original appearance as a tower, even though it was no longer functional for defensive purposes.

Evolution in the Habsburg and Post-War Period

During the Habsburg period and up to the first post-war period, the area around Tor Cucherna reflected the multiple historical layers of the city, shifting from a medieval defensive context to one of residence and urban passage, while maintaining a symbolic value in the city's historical memories.

In the following years, despite being a site of great historical and archaeological value, Tor Cucherna has undergone progressive decay and abandonment, eventually becoming a victim of neglect and degradation, with problems of dirt and limited public access.

Underground Structures and Recent History

Furthermore, near the tower some underground structures developed connected to Trieste's more recent history, such as air-raid shelters and bunkers from the Second World War, which constitute an interesting historical insight for enthusiasts.

Historical Significance

Tor Cucherna therefore represents a tangible symbol of the complex historical stratification of Trieste, ranging from the Middle Ages to the first post-war period, with architectural and social transformations that testify to its evolution over time.
